Bach Dang Wharf has anchored Saigon's riverfront since French colonial administrators dredged the channel in 1862, transforming a marshy bend of the Saigon River into the city's primary cargo landing.
By the 1920s steamships queued three-deep along the five-hundred-metre quay, unloading Cambodian rubber and Mekong rice beneath cast-iron cranes that still stand, now painted heritage green, at the wharf's southern end. The wide promenade — five Nguyen Tat Thanh Street runs its length — was paved with Marseille stone and flanked by tamarind trees, a design intended to evoke the Seine but adapted to monsoon drainage with raised curbs and catchment grates every twelve metres.
Today the wharf serves a different fleet. Wooden-hulled dinner vessels, most rebuilt from cargo junks or fishing trawlers in the 1990s, berth stern-first against floating pontoons that rise and fall with the twice-daily tidal pulse from the South China Sea, sixty kilometres downstream. The largest craft — twin-deck, forty-metre designs with open upper saloons and glazed lower cabins — carry up to two hundred diners on two-hour loops that trace the colonial port's original turning basin, now ringed by the LED-clad towers of Districts 1, 2 and 4. A Saigon River cruise dinner departs every half-hour between 5pm and 8pm; advance booking secures window seating and timing that aligns sunset — golden between October and March, hazy but warm April through September — with the downstream leg past Landmark 81, Southeast Asia's fourth-tallest spire.
Buffet service dominates the format. Galley crews prep bánh xèo batter, grilled prawns and caramelised pork in dock-side commissaries, then transfer chafing trays aboard thirty minutes before departure; live-fire woks are banned under maritime rules, so dishes arrive pre-cooked and held at temperature. Most operators include unlimited soft drinks and one welcome cocktail — typically a passionfruit mojito or lemongrass gin fizz — with premium tiers adding wine pairings or private tables on the foredeck. Traditional music ensembles — đàn tranh zither, đàn bầu monochord, sometimes a small ca trù vocal trio — perform on the upper deck during the outbound hour, switching to amplified pop covers on the return as the city lights intensify and the Bitexco Tower's helipad beacon begins its nightly rotation.
